Funeral Services and Burial Vaults

A burial vault is a lined and sealed outer receptacle that houses caskets or cremation urns. Vaults are made of concrete, plastic or metal.

A burial vault is an important part of cemetery and funeral home services. It serves as an outer enclosure for the burial remains, and the coffins or cremation urns serve as an inner enclosure.  Unlike a burial liner, which only covers the top and sides of the coffin, a vault completely encloses a coffin.

Burial vaults protect caskets and cremation urns from the weight of the earth and heavy maintenance equipment that will pass over the grave. It also helps resist water and preserves the beauty of the cemetery or memorial park by preventing the ground from settling in on the gravesite.  This gives the ground a neat and even appearance, and helps reduce the chance of a person tripping on sunken ground.

Contrary to popular belief, regardless of whether or not the body is embalmed, burial vaults will not prevent decomposition of the body.
